How to Care and Clean Stainless Steel

The stainless steel products listed as “304 Grade” in this catalogue have the following characteristics:

Stainless type 304 is an austenitic steel, containing 18 - 20% chromium, 8 - 10.5% nickel, combined with a maximum of 0.08% carbon.

The stainless alloy resists most oxidising acids and can withstand all ordinary rusting. However, it will tarnish or rust over time. A major cause of stainless steel corrosion is from being dirty. The dirt can disrupt the protective chromium oxide that forms on the surface. This oxide keeps the stainless steel from rusting or corroding. Therefore, regular cleaning is important to help in preventing rusting.
For severe environments such as salt water spray in coastal areas, a higher level of resistance to corrosion is required. Stainless type 316 is the required.

Stainless steel is easy to clean. Washing with soap or a mild detergent and warm water followed by a clean water rinse and wipe dry with clean cloth.

For stubborn stains and discoloured finishes, wash with mild cleaning solutions, e.g. Jif, or specialty stainless steel cleaners. Use a rag, sponge, or fibre brush, soft nylon, or natural bristle. Never use steel wool on stainless steel. An old toothbrush can be useful, rinse well with clean water and wipe dry.
